God is Smart, D.L.

It never ceases to amaze me how “smart” God is. Christ, likened to a grain of wheat in Jn 12:24, gave His life to produce many grains, that is, many members of the church which is His Body. As a member of the Body, I enjoy being with other members who share the same life of Christ with me. Meeting with the local church, I have experienced something of the reality of the body of Christ. The believers meeting with the local churches give forth a flavor that's very comforting and consoling.

I had a chance to visit other Christians in Japan earlier this year (1999). I was deeply touched by their warm hospitality. It seems like there was a bond bringing us together as soon as we met. This common denominator among us even overcame the language and culture barriers. Apart from Christ, we are just separate individuals, but in Christ we have the same divine life, and this life flows among us so that we could nourish and cherish each other. God is so smart. He died so that we all can partake of Him and share His riches with one another (2 Peter 1:4, Ephesians 3:8).

The Milk of the Word

Throughout the centuries, many faithful ones have lost their lives on behalf of the truth they put out. Martin Luther, who seemingly was up against the monumental force of the Catholic church nonetheless risked his life to stand for the truth of justification by faith. In the same way, Witness Lee and Watchman Nee, despite all oppositions, were faithful to put out the truth they have seen. I praise God that through the ministry of Witness Lee and Watchman Nee, I have come to know Christ bit by bit.

Here is a truth from their ministry that I appreciate: After receiving the Lord, I am qualified to be a child of God. This is not a small matter. John 1:13 tells us that Christians are those “who were begotten not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh...but of God.” Yes, I'm a bonafide child of God! As a newborn babe, I need to take in the milk of the word for growth (1Peter 2:2). To grow is a matter of life and in life. After receiving the divine life I need to grow in this life by feeding from the milk conveyed in the word of God. It was through the ministry of Witness Lee and Watchman Nee that the Bible was opened up in a new and comestible way for me.

I still have a long way to go and I should not always stay in the infant stage. As Heb. 5:14 shows me, I need to go on to the “solid food.” My prayer is that the Lord will keep me humble and meek so I can to receive Him in His word.
